Once back at ground level you can visit the old engine room, see the old boilers, use the restrooms and visit the gift shop. Once across you can either go down the steps or use another lift. At the sides of the walkway are windows which offer great views of the Thames and includes small sliding windows which open to allow you to take photos without reflections from the windows. Through the floor you can see traffic passing over the bridge. ![]() Right in the centre is a glass floor where people either jump up and down on it to prove they wont fall through, or cower at the sides. This is where Spiderman fought Mysterio in the movie. Then comes the main event, the upper walkway. ![]() Once up the top a guide greets you and tells you interesting facts about the making of the tower and points to a photo of a man who fell from the tower during construction, then swam to the shore and climbed back to the top and continued working. The lift wasn't working on the north side on the day of my visit, which meant I climbed the stairs and I'm so glad I did as I got to see the original colour of the bridge, some great views out of the windows and saw lots of history including how the bridge opens and how a man once jumped the bridge in a red London bus. When visiting, there are 2 ways to reach the top, by walking up 206 steps or by using the lift/elevator. This walkway is still open today, albeit for a fee, which also includes access to the old engine room and guides on hand to talk about the history of the bridge. What most people don't realise however, is that the upper structure is a walkway that was built to allow pedestrians to cross even when the bridge was raised. The views from the top were awesome and the glass floor provided some very cool perspective on the river and the bridge itself. Maybe they already offer a small group tour, but if they don't, they should. The old boilers and pumps were cool to see, but I wish we could have seen the actual working mechanism (even if you don't get to see it work - since openings don't happen randomly). This is a tour that you could easily blow through in an hour or less, but if you take your time (which we did) and enjoy the views and read about the history, you should plan on a couple of hours to see the exhibits. We visited in September 2022 the weekend before the Queen's funeral, so the access pattern was a little different from the usual signage, but it only delayed us a few minutes and all of the staff were extremely polite and helpful.
